user experience & product design

Overview

My first roles as a UX Designer came during a time when the title was still widely referred to as Human Centered Engineer or Product Designer and most of us in the practice read books, instead of blog posts. Over the last 15 years, this field has exploded into specific niches and focus areas, but my goal has remained the same: create seamless, obvious experiences that solve problems for people.

FOCUS

Rather than being measured on the output of their design work, the product designer should be measured on the success of the product.

the foundation

The foundational pillars of all great design work is a true understanding of who you’re designing for and the challenges and processes they are currently using in their day-to-day. For this work, I like to create:

User Personas, Empathy Maps, Service Blueprints, User Journey Flows, and Channel Diagrams.

iteration

A good designer does more than push pixels. I do my best work when I’m communicating and collaborating early and often with development, product leadership and sales/customer service to ensure our end experience hits the mark. For this work, I like to keep things fast and nimble with:

User Story Maps, User Flows, Low Fidelity Wireframes, Design Sprint Artifacts, User Narrative and Challenge Artifacts.

end game

Once we’re aligned, it’s time to get down to business and decide the best way to show the user the key steps of our experience necessary to grow our product and help them succeed. For this work, I turn to:

High Fidelity Wireframes, High Fidelity Prototypes, and creating Design Systems to stay consistent.

TESTIMONIAL

“Joell drives projects forward with passion and enthusiasm.

She solves problems with a focus on the user and always fights for what is right. She is never afraid to dive in technically, or do whatever it takes to move the project forward.

In addition to this she brings a positive energy and zeal to all undertakings.”
